Arizona Injury Law: What Scottsdale Accident Victims Should Know
You have two years to file
Most Arizona personal injury lawsuits must be filed within two years (A.R.S. 12-542). If a city, county, state agency or public employee is involved, a notice of claim is due within 180 days (A.R.S. 12-821.01), so do not wait.
Shared fault doesn’t end your claim
Arizona uses pure comparative fault. Your share of the blame reduces your damages, but it does not bar the claim (A.R.S. 12-2505). That’s why insurers work so hard to raise your percentage.
Dog owners are strictly liable
If a dog bites you in a public place or while you’re lawfully on private property, the owner is liable regardless of the dog’s history (A.R.S. 11-1025). Claims under this law can face a shorter deadline than other injury cases.
Helmets and motorcycle claims
Arizona requires helmets only for riders and passengers under 18 (A.R.S. 28-964). Riding without one as an adult does not disqualify your claim, though an insurer may argue it affected your injuries.
How to Get a Scottsdale Accident Report
If Scottsdale Police responded to your crash, the city provides collision reports online through CARFAX CrashDOCS. You will need an involved party’s last name, the collision date, the departmental report number, and a valid credit card. Records can also be requested through the department’s Records Section, or we can request the report on your behalf.

Parham Hakimi is the founder of Select Law and leads the firm’s Scottsdale office. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and his law degree from Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, and worked at a large Arizona personal injury and bankruptcy firm before starting his own practice. He has been a member of the State Bar of Arizona since 2017, so his connection to Arizona law goes back further than the Scottsdale office itself.
