One of the most important automobile insurance coverages one can purchase is medical payments coverage. This coverage is often overlooked or deemed unimportant by insurance agents, which is a big mistake.
Medical payments coverage is a type of health insurance in an auto policy that can usually be purchased in increments of $1,000, $2,000, $5,000, $10,000 or more. It is not a mandatory coverage.
If you are injured in a motor vehicle accident, your medical bills will be paid up to the limit of your coverage without regard as to who is at fault. If you happen to have four passengers in your car and all are injured, each person has coverage up to the limit of your purchase. Thus, if you had $10,000 in coverage, each injured person has $10,000 in coverage to pay for medical expenses.
Medical payments coverage is portable. This means you don’t have to be in a vehicle to benefit from it. It covers a pedestrian or a bicyclist who is struck by a car, or it even covers a person sitting in his or her home when injured by a car crashing through a wall.
Most health insurance policies these days don’t cover 100% of a medical bill. Medical payments coverage will supplement a health insurance policy that only pays 80% or declines a certain charge. Furthermore, with a personal injury settlement, federal law entitles many health insurances plans to recoup the money paid to accident-related medical providers out of an injured party’s personal injury settlement proceeds. In those situations, it is as if the injured party is uninsured. Medical payments coverage, however, will step in to pay these bills and is not entitled to any reimbursement right under $5,000.
Medical payment is inexpensive yet a valuable coverage to have.
